Blackberry Bold 9900. First Impressions, Just a few hours we had the opportunity to make the first evidence to the Blackberry Bold 9900, the only terminal that the Canadian company has presented its annual event, the Blackberry World Orlando.
RIM is a company that is released to compete in these arenas than other brands. Their focus remains the professional market. That does not mean that are incorporated improvements from model to model and the Bold 9900 is the best terminal that have launched to date. Let's look in depth which have been the most significant changes over previous Bold family members.
Redesigned, and touchscreen controls
The first thing that catches the attention of the Bold 9900 is the design change quite radically if we consider that RIM is a very conservative brand in this field. The new Bold leaves the black plastic curved tops of their predecessors to take a visible stainless steel frame on all sides of the phone and very reminiscent of the iPhone 4.
The buttons also in steel, maintaining the usual configuration of the brand, microUSB and 3.5 mm jack as the only visible connections. The photos do not convey a very reliable design changes. The 9900 is very different from previous models. RIM has done an excellent job with the design change, which gives the terminal a halo of more robust and better integration of components.
The screen has not only grown up to 2.8 inches diagonal, but has become tactile. It is the first time that RIM dare touch screen to give one of its classic format devices (not counting here the two Storm, which are completely tactile or Torch, which is slider) and the result is very good. The display, capacitive, reacts smoothly and fairly accurately. Smaller controls that are beyond the fingers always be handled with reliable optical trackpad that, fortunately, has not been eliminated.
The only downside is the controls on the keyboard. It's not that bad. Still as comfortable as previous versions but, by increasing the screen size has also increased the width of the terminal (115 × 66 × 10.5 mm compared to, say, 109 × 60 × 14 of the Bold 9780). That, coupled with straight edges makes it a little harder to type with one hand. The Bold 9900 is preferably a Blackberry for use with both hands.
Otherwise, the display of the Bold 9900 boasts a high pixel density (287dpi) that allows to greatly reduce the size of the fonts and installed easily themes with more buttons. RIM technology called Liquid Graphics and does not specify if that refers to an LED to something like a ClearBlack or otherwise. Here we can only confirm colors and a superb viewing quality in horizontal angle. Vertically colors distort fairly quickly.
Internal features
Although not a dual core processor at 624MHz pass the Bold 9780 at 1.2GHz in 9900 is a tremendous leap. It supports 768MB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory for storage and port for MicroSD cards up to 32GB.
The sensor of the camera keeps the five-megapixel models added to the equation and video recording in 720p HD. What little we could try the camera confirms that keeps the great fast shutter previous models.
We could swear that more grain is also seen major deviations and color in this new camera, but the lighting conditions of the event were, as always, bad and the operating system still had some instabilities (the scroll on the touch screen, for example, worked on some pages) so you better reserve the verdict in a more detailed analysis.
The pass through WiFi wireless n dual-band at 2.4 and 5GHz, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, HSDPA and undetermined speed. The Blackberry Bold 9900 also integrates NFC and A-GPS with digital compass.
One of the most worrying aspects is the battery. The Bold 9900 has a 1230mAh. This is the same battery as the Blackberry Torch, and less powerful than the Bold 9780 (1500mAh). Given the expected increased consumption of the processor and screen, perhaps the 9900 does not come to meet the expectations of its predecessors in terms of autonomy, a plot which had always been assumed Blackberry.
First and only 7 OS Blackberry terminal
The Blackberry Bold 9900 is the first and so far the only, to bring the new version 7 of Blackberry OS. We say the only because RIM has confirmed that there will be any updates to go from version 6 to 7 in previous models. Apparently, the stated reason for this restriction by RIM is the graphics power required by the new software. The Bold 9900 can move with agility, but no previous terminals.
Blackberry 7 OS incorporates a faster browser and javascript support HTML5. Also more effectively separate work and leisure connections by an application called Blackberry Balance. Will tell you the details of the system in Engadget and XatakaMovil as they become known.
The Bold 9900 is, in short, the RIM Blackberry needed to gain a foothold in the high-end markets, those which touch terminals of other companies are doing more damage. The 9900 retains the spirit of the range Bold, adds the ability to surf or control the phone with a touchscreen and does not reject good ideas like the touchpad.
The software is as organized and fast as usual. The design change is now more a matter of taste, but it seems to us very successful. Potential weaknesses remain to be seen as the camera or battery life. The 9900 is, in my opinion, the best Blackberry RIM has created so far. Hopefully this is enough to maintain its share in a market increasingly complex and aggressive.
