Sprint Model 4G leaves for the RIM playbook - Sprint Nextel has abandoned plans to commercialize a high-speed version of the tablet playbook of Research In Motion due to low demand, which is another blow to BlackBerry maker.

Eight months after being announced as the first operator to partner with tablets RIM, Sprint, the third mobile operator in the U.S., said Friday it was canceling a version of WiMax service Playbook for fourth generation (4G).

Playbook is having trouble competing with the widely popular Apple iPad tablet, while RIM's BlackBerry has a tough battle with Apple's iPhone.

Sprint said that the cancellation of the tablet was "a mutual decision."

But Paget Alves, head of Sprint's business services, said the tablets with short-range Wi-Fi were much more popular than tablets for long-distance networks such as WiMax.

For its part, RIM said that although WiMax, prioritize the development of integrated products that Long Term Evolution (LTE), a rival to WiMax. RIM said that it was testing LTE models playbook this fall and plans to begin testing operator in the U.S. and the international market.

The two major U.S. wireless carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT & T, are building networks based on LTE. AT & T would not comment on whether to sell a Playbook LTE.
